Second in series of Mile by Mile Guides by Osterwald
First published in 1976, this guidebook is for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic
Railroad that meanders back and forth across the New Mexico-Colorado border between Chama,
N.M. and Antonito, Colo. The 64-mile route is a portion of the former Denver & Rio
Grande Railroad built from Denver westward to the mining towns and camps in the San Juan
mountains in the 1880s. Purchased by the states of Colorado and New Mexico in 1970, the
railroad is Americas longest and highest narrow gauge steam railroad. This edition
has 17 maps and more than 120 color and black and white photos that explain and document
every mile of the spectacular tripboth westbound and eastbound. Following the
general format of Osterwalds other guidebooks, there are extensive chapters on the
history of the area, the railroads equipment, buildings and operations, in addition
to general discussions on the geology, nature, incredible scenery and points of interest.
This book a must for anyone traveling on the C&TS.
